Highlights From Our Day

Assembly- Guest Speaker -  Shane Cunningham

Mr. Cunningham works for the Calgary Board of Education, he is also Metis. He told us about the importance of the land to the aboriginal people living in Southern Alberta.  The Blackfoot people's traditional land was huge and this allowed them to follow the buffalo. He also explained the importance of medicine rock circles. There is a rock medicine circle in Nose Hill Park.

Learning To Read Non- Fiction Text

We first talked about the differences between fiction and non- fiction. Then we brainstormed examples of fiction and non-fiction text.  Afterwards, we looked at a non-fiction article and began by first looking carefully at the title and then we made predictions about the story based on the title. We also learned about the captions that are often under pictures and photographs in non-fiction text.  As well, we learned about the importance of the introduction and headings in non-fiction text.

There are many text features that help us read and understand non-fiction text. For example, bold print, coloured print, highlighted text, italics, diagrams, time lines, bullets, captions, table of contents, index, maps, graphs, glossaries and charts and graphs. The really fun part of the lesson was choosing a non-fiction rock and mineral book and completing a scavenger hunt, where we searched for text features.

Classifying Rocks-Testing Hardness and Texture

We learned about how to test for texture and hardness today. We used the Mohs hardness scale to figure out hardness. We also had a texture chart to help us figure out tour unknown rock's textures.
