Pledge for the Planet - Part 2 *Updated*

Dear Parents,

Our Junior Ecologists have been hard at work! After our research and presentation of endangered animals in India, the students were concerned about what we are actually doing to stop some of the human impact that is occurring and causing species to become vulnerable, endangered, and even extinct. We extended our research based on the WWF website on the problems of human impact, but more importantly the solutions. Yesterday, students took the Pledge for the Planet, and choose a couple of ideas that they would like to teach their families about, but also start to change certain habits in their lives.
Ask you child what they pledged.
Small changes make big impacts.

Today, we continued our conversations about different conservation organizations that they cared deeply about. We found out more about these organizations and ended in a persuasive debate on which organization we should support. It was so close!! Out of the 3 organizations, the Calgary Zoo won by a hair! We learned a lot from previous ecology articles about how the Calgary Zoo is a strong leader in conservation and globally respected. Ask your child who they voted for and why.

Lastly, after deciding that the Calgary Zoo was the organization we wanted to support, students ideated around possible fundraising ideas. All ideas were good ideas, but had to follow certain criteria. After narrowing down our choices, we decided on 2 ideas.

  • The first idea is a Toy Exchange. They liked this idea very much, because not only do the students save unused toys from the landfill, they also can have fun! They decided that each student should find an unused toy, in good condition that they can bring on Wednesday, June 12. Each student has the option to bring $5 and purchase a toy from another student.

  • The second idea was to make some bookmarks, decorated with art, our own original poetry, or a message for the earth. The students would bring these home to sell, and hopefully find a family member/neighbour willing to support this very important cause. The students decided to try and sell the bookmarks for $5 each.

Thank you in advance for your support as we begin our adventure in making positive changes in the world! The earth greatly appreciates it.
