A Photo Update
These last few weeks have been full of learning and exploring. Students continue to deepen their understanding of multiplicative reasoning through learning many different approaches to solving a problem. Currently students are looking at a simple cake recipe, and figuring out how to make the recipe for their whole family.
We are beginning our new inquiry through the lens of an architect. This connects both of our guiding questions, "What is life and who am I in it?" and "How does our land influence how we live?" Students will delve deep into a global community and using their understanding of building and testing, will try and solve a problem using the iterative process.
As we begin our understanding around global citizenship and quality of life, students in our class will look closely at the country of Peru. To begin, we are making a connection to the quipu. This is an artifact with a system of strings and knots, that either tells a story, tells an account, or represents numbers. Student in our class wrote about some of their favorite memories, attached a feeling/emotion to it, then chose a color to represent that emotion. Once they were ready, students had the opportunity to turn their stories into a symbolic representation as a weaving.
Before solving our global problem, students are learning foundational understandings of building and testing. They have had the opportunity to learn through STEM challenges and the scientific method. Ask your child what they know about: columns, triangular trusses, stability in towers, arches, and structures that span a gap. Which column do you think is the strongest? The cylinder? The trianglular prism? Or the rectangular prism? Tell your child your hypothesis and then have them tell you the science behind the answer.
