Investigating Rocks
How does our land influence how we live?
Then we spent time looking closely at the great variety of Alberta rocks everyone brought in. We noticed color, texture, sparkle and many other differences between the rocks. Afterwards we talked about how we sort our belongings at home and how this relates to how geologists sort and classify rocks. Again we returned to the rocks and tried to figure out different ways of sorting them. First we sorted in a small group and then we joined groups together into big groups. It was fun to have more rocks, but it was more difficult to decide what categories to use.
We ended our investigation by discussing how geologists around the world classify rocks. We wondered if different countries sorted and categorize different ways or do all geologists sort the same way.
Reminders:
Royal Oak Students are invited to wear an orange shirt on Friday, September 28th in recognition of Orange Shirt Day.
“Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.”
To learn more about why we are wearing an orange shirt, we have provided a link that explains Phyllis’ story below:
